Cause of the Month
"In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"
At American Lutheran Church, we believe in being active members of our Community. All year long we support a cause of the Month and give our love, service and generosity to help make a difference in the lives of everyone in our Community.
Wheels for the World
For over 35 years, the Joni and Friends mission has been to communicate the gospel and to equip Christ-honoring churches worldwide to evangelize and disciple people affected by disabilities. Through the ministry program Wheels for the World, they serve the global disability community in Christ's name.
People with limited mobility are tragically often excluded from life in their communities. Receiving a wheelchair allows them to attend school & church, therefore becoming part of their communities & villages, changing their lives forever.
Each wheelchair costs $ 150 to send. This is an incredible gift because in some countries, the cost of a wheelchair can equal a YEAR'S wages, making it impossible for people with disabilities to ever receive one!

Four phases of the ministry:
Collection — Chair corps volunteers collect used wheelchairs, walkers, crutches & canes at drop-off sites or by picking up.
Transportation — Wheelchairs & other mobility equipment must be transported from collection sites to the restoration shops & then to the ports for departure. With over 10,000 wheelchairs collected each year, they are always looking for extra help & willing truckers.
Restoration — Wheels for the World currently restores wheelchairs at 15 federal, state & private correctional facilities in 12 different states. Inmates are trained to restore wheelchairs to like new condition.
Distribution — After restoration, wheelchairs & equipment are shipped to countries around the world & provided through outreaches. At distribution, volunteer teams of disability specialists fit each wheelchair to the recipient and give training in its use. They also are given a Bible and gospel message.
