Cause of the Month
"In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"
At American Lutheran Church, we believe in being active members of our Community. All year long we support a cause of the Month and give our love, service and generosity to help make a difference in the lives of everyone in our Community.
Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach
2121 N 27th St
PO Box 80935
Lincoln NE 68501
Matt Talbot was started in 1992 by Mary Costello, with the help of others and their churches, serving Lincoln's homeless a meal on Saturday nights.
It was named after an Irish Catholic man born in 1856. Working as a messenger for a wine merchant, he began drinking heavily at 12 years old and was a confirmed alcoholic at 13. At 28, Matt vowed to quit drinking. His sobriety was supported with prayer, spiritual reading, worship and community support. Matt passed away in 1925.

Rent Wise- a six module class to help people find and keep decent rental housing by being successful renters. They earn a certificate of completion to show potential landlords they want to be good tenants.
Homeless Diversion- for those who are on the edge of becoming homeless but are not currently or chronically homeless as defined by federal rules.
C.A.R.E. [Counseling, Advocacy, Referral, Evaluation/Education]- Classes, Substance Use Evaluations & Counseling, Pre-Treatment Groups and Weekly AA meeting to help those who struggle with alcohol and drug abuse.
Matt Talbot's Mission
To serve the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of Lincoln's working poor and homeless through outreach, advocacy, education and the provision of food and shelter.
